All about the 'BOND WITH THE MOUNTAINS'

The Panchachuli mountains are a group of five snow-capped Himalayan peaks lying at the end of the eastern Kumaon region, in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand. They form the watershed between the Gori and the Darmaganga valleys. The five peaks on the Panchachuli massif are numbered from northwest to southeast. The highest peak is Panchachuli II, and this group's name is derived from the legendary Pandavas' "Five Chulis" (cooking hearths), where they cooked their last meal before proceeding toward their heavenly abode.

The trail is a gradual climb, with some steep encounters along the way, as we walk through forests and open grasslands. The journey will be enhanced by the inclusion of art, which is that special ingredient that bonds man to nature, and well as child to parent. This unique experience keeps the wonder of nature, Panchachuli, at its base, and is built with the strong pillars of learning and art, along with the local culture. And of course, when we reach our destination, the Panchachuli basecamp, the views are breathtaking!

Our camps will comprise of mobile guest tents (Dome / Alpine) with comfortable air-beds and pillows. The troupe will comprise of the tour leader who is an experienced and qualified mountaineer as well as a support team that includes assistant trek leaders, the head chef, assistant cook, camp helpers, porters (man or mules).

Decent levels of fitness will be required for this trek. The route is extended for daily walks of up to 4-5 hours with optimum resting period particularly suitable for first timers. We will walk on hilly, rocky and sandy tracks and there will be a high possibility of crossing tiny water streams. The maximum altitude we will reach is around 4200 to 14000 feet, with a gradual gain in height, so the chances of altitude sickness will be very less.

Post lunch; proceed to New Delhi station to take the Shatabdi to Haldwani. A rolling train journey takes us to the mountains where we are met by waiting Innovas & proceed to Bhimtal an hour away. Our night halt is Freddy’s bungalow -  a colonial era cottage in the midst of the pine forests.

  2. DAY 2: SUNDAY, 30TH APRIL 2017 BHIMTAL - URTHING: 7 HRS. DRIVE

Next morning, we have a hearty breakfast & depart to Urthing – the starting point of our trek. It’s a long drive up the hills & we depart early. The road starts to ascend gradually from here on. We bypass the town of Dharchula & proceed to Dar. Dharchula also known as the gateway to Kailash Mansarovar. Dharchula is right on the the Mahakali river, with Nepal on the other bank, separated by a foot bridge which is open for 12 hrs a day.

It’s a three hours drive from Dharchula to Dar. The road has been extended further to Urthing and Naagling, due to their unpredictable weather conditions, Dar is the last road-head camp in this valley. The drive is along a winding road and we will see the villages of Tawaghat and Sobla along the way. Upon reaching Dar, a further 30 minutes drive from Dar will take us to the campsite of Urthing. While you drive along a narrow ridge, the road takes you through a forest & we see the Dhauliganga stream flowing along.

We camp overnight at Baaling village. After we rest for a while, the evening will be delightful as we hear our art expert take us through the concepts and essence of colours, and its significance in art. This will be followed by some mouth-watering local cuisine, which we assure you, will cater to everyone’s taste buds. We sleep beneath the stars, in anticipation of the following days.

    Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    Overnight in Campsite at Urthing

  3. DAY 3: MONDAY, 1ST MAY 2017 URTHING - NAGLING: 10 KMS TREK

The walk today is a relatively easy one, with short ascends and descends.  We walk along the Dhaulaganga waters as the green pastoral land on the other side of our trail, complements the blue waters. The walk gives you ample time to relax and enjoy the view of the mountains. There are some beautiful stream crossings along the way, and the major ones are provided with makeshift bridges to aid the traveller. As we thread along and pass one such crossing over the stream, we reach the campsite of Sela, on the outskirts of Nagling, on a green meadow alongside the river.

We set up our camps in this beautiful campsite and relax for a while, over tea. Such a picturesque location, calls for Day 2 of our art session, where the easel, brushes, colours and charcoal will be set out for you, as your art expert guides you through the practical application of ‘brush on paper.’

Dinner tonight continues to be sumptuous as we warm ourselves by the bonfire, where the story teller continues the story of the mountains, from where they left off the previous day.

    Meal: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    Overnight in Campsite at Nagling

  4. DAY 4: TUESDAY, 2ND MAY 2017 NAGLING - SON: 7 KMS TREK

Today you are going to enter the alpine area, so the thrill and excitement factor definitely doubles up. The path winds along hillsides and through rocky patches and then enters a thick coniferous forest, which has trees of Oak and Birch. As we continue to walk along, we will reach a meadow, and the view from the top is breathtaking as you watch the glaciers in the distance, on the mountain ranges.

Son is an amazing site to camp and is usually uninhabited, making it a very divine place for us to camp the night. We reach the camp by lunch time. Post lunch, children get busy interpreting the natural beauty on the canvas. Adults can relax on the meadows. A few adventurous adults can take a short hike up the mountains.

Dusk brings with it some of the chilly winds of the mountain passes. We warm ourselves around the bonfire, our team of chefs pampering us. Our daily night story enters an interesting phase with story tellers taking us into the battles fought & the perils faced by the central characters of the story.

    Meal: Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner
    Overnight in Campsite at Son

  5. DAY 5: WEDNESDAY, 3RD MAY 2017 SON - PANCHACHULI BASECAMP: 4 KMS TREK

This morning is very special, because we are nearly there….in a sense just a walk away from our destination. There is a narrow trail, which goes through the Dantu Bugyals and forest covers. (Bugyals are alpine pasture lands or measows, in the higher elevation range and in Uttarakhand, they are lovingly referred to as ‘nature’s own garden’). When you reach the glacier which is on the side of the Meoli river, you begin a steep ascend to the base camp. The trek to Pancha Chuli base camp itself is very picturesque with the bugyals stretching far on one side and the forests of birch and conifer seducing us on the other.

There are exotic varieties of wild plants like wild strawberries and poppies, along the way. We will be faced with some steep ascends and descends, till we eventually reach the base camp. With the peaks towering above and an endless stretch of glaciers, this spot provides for some incredible scenic beauty of the sprawling meadows bordered by tall trees, with the Panch Chuli (6904m.) towering in the background.

As we camp here on this iconic evening, the night greets us with stars that are absolutely unmatched. And therefore, there is no better place than this for some stargazing and wise words from an expert in the field of stars, after a well-deserved dinner. Maybe, some of you may choose to pen down some thoughts or paint the night, but whatever you may choose, this will be a night to cherish.

    Meal:  Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner
Overnight in Campsite at Panchachuli Base

  6. DAY 6: THURSDAY, 4TH MAY 2017 PANCHACHULI BASECAMP - NAGLING: 15 KMS TREK

Today we will start our journey back. It is advisable to start the day early as we are going to skip a camp on the way. It is mostly downhill and we will continue to enjoy the landscapes and the views of the glaciers on the way back, while they stay in our memories forever. Another peculiar observation, which you should look out for will be the view as we descend. While technically it stays the same, they will still look different. I wonder why? Maybe our trek leader could throw some light on this.

We reach Naagling by evening and spent the night camping at Sela, once again. It’s a long walk today & we reach by late afternoon. Refreshments are served along the route as we trek along. By the time we reach, our chefs are at the camp site, ready with lunch.

The story tellers set up the bonfire, with the climax of the story ready, waiting to enthrall our young listeners. Dinner is served around the bonfire.

    Meal: Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner
    Overnight in Campsite at Nagling

  7. DAY 7: FRIDAY, 5TH MAY 2017 NAGLING - URTHING & DRIVE TO BHIMTAL: 8 KMS trek 6 HRS. DRIVE

Today is the last day of our trek and we will walk our way back through the meadows for one last time, unless you decide to trek the Panchachuli once again. After reaching Urthing, we drive though the village of Darchula and reach the town of Bhimtal.

We check into Freddys Bungalow & relax as the night sets in. Dinner is served. We have the entire of next morning to explore the forests behind the Bungalow & the town of Bhimtal.

    Meal:  Breakfast,Lunch and Dinner
Overnight in Fredy’s bungalow, Bhimtal, Himachal Pradesh

  8. DAY 8: SATURDAY, 6TH MAY 2017 BHIMTAL - KATHGODAM - NEW DELHI

Next morning is leisure time. We wake up late & lazy around twirling our cups of tea. Those interested can see the town of Bhimtal by foot or on cycles. Meals served on demand today as its more of a leisurely brunch. We depart at noon to reach Kathgodam in time to board our Shatabdi to New Delhi.

We leave the mountains with beautiful memories of trekking with our children. The idea was to spend time with them, expose them to the mountains & see a different facet of our children. What we have achieved is giving them the sense of achievement, an exposure to a different culture.

The trek may be finished, but the mind is free to wander…. Over the mountains, hills & seas… already planning the next adventure
