The Road Less Travelled – Flash from the past

Flashback: It was certainly a recurring dream that could not be ignored anymore. Except, that this was not just a dream while asleep, it started becoming a driving force every single day. That is what Shankar Ganesh, Co-founder of The Road Less Travelled felt for five months before he decided to put pen to paper, rubber to the road, trekking bags to the hills or whatever it took to set the ball rolling. That is how ‘The Roadless Travelled’ was born, one fine morning in October 2016. Going in the flashback, TRLT is a concept, which has emerged from a true passion …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – Last part of the Journey

Last part of the Journey: The Grand Dewachen in Kaza is placed so beautifully that when I opened my eyes the next morning, I was greeted by a warm mountain looking back at me and saying “Are you ready for another exciting day?” and my response as I stretched on the cozy bed was, “Why not? But can we wait just a little longer so that I can continue to admire you? That’s how beautiful you are.” We were nearing the end of our tour but I never tired of the mountains and its magnanimous yet welcoming presence. We were …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – PART 8

And so we continue… I was pretty sure last night was a dream. But then, I also remember the smell of late night chai as we sat together, huddled, looking at the sky at 2am, watching the Milky Way. What a spectacular moment that was? As I lay in bed, I started to wonder. When I write the most memorable parts of this trip or prepare a list of must-dos and must-watch, how was I supposed to narrow down the list to a few? The trip seemed to be getting better day-by-day. Our morning breakfast was very different here. We …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – PART 6

Do you know how it feels to have that rhythmic hum in your head? That was something I usually experienced when I did my breathing exercises during yoga class, especially when I repeated the words ‘Om,’ known for its positive vibrations all across a person’s body. I felt the same rhythmic hum in my whole body as I sat at the Diskit monastery the next morning, about three hours before we were to leave for Tso Moriri. The previous afternoon, this same monastery shone white in the near-afternoon sun, but the morning sun, gave the monastery a muted white, with …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – PART 5

And so we continue… When I first heard the name Diskit, I was a bit confused until I realized it was the name of a village and not a tongue-twister biscuit. Then I wondered what Diskit meant. This village, located in the periphery of the desert in the Shok Valley, shares its name with that of the 350-year-old monastery within the village. This was our day to explore some parts of the Nubra valley, especially Diskit and look around this magnificent monastery and more. Diskit Village is an administrative center of the Nubra Valley, comprising of various government offices in …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – PART 4

And so we continue……. This was my fourth Parle G with tea. The biscuit was the fourth but my tea was the second. I usually don’t keep track, but the view that I was looking at would undoubtedly compel me to stay a bit longer which would eventually mean more tea and biscuit. But that’s just part of what I wanted to say – what was truly capturing my attention was the spectacular view of the ‘valley of flowers’ also known as the ‘orchard of ladakh’ also known as the nubra valley. We were at the monastery, which was up …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – PART 3

And so we continue……. In Leh, the early mornings remind me of this amazing brown doughnut topped with blue and white icing. I used to wonder if I could just bite into it, so that I could savour the succulent brown mountains and landscape topped with the bluest of blue skies and specks of cloud. This was my view from my beautiful room at Grand Dragon, on our first day at Leh. Having decided to start our day a little late, we all gathered for a late breakfast that comprised of a complete indian & international spread.  We had two …

HOW I GOT LEH’D – PART2

And so we continue…….             When we say ‘a cold morning’ in the mountains, it is actually a term that can be used for almost every single morning. But the coldness, with a stray ray of sunshine maneuvering its way through the crevices in the cloud, is a feeling and a sight to behold. I knew I was quite tired after a long Day 1, but there was something in the air that woke me up and I guess this serendipitous encounter with the morning sun was the exact ammunition I needed to get started. …
